The Devi Weave

Our weavers are trained in traditional Tibetan hand knotting techniques that are no longer used in commercial carpet production. They are too complex. Every weaver in our collective was taught specially by a weaving master.

Among the most important aspects of the weaving technique is the half knots and quarter knots. In certain areas of a rug, the weavers shift to a much finer spun yarn, allowing for a level of detail a standard knot cannot achieve. Think of it as extra fine pixels in specific parts of the design. It is what gives a tiger's nails and teeth their sharpness, a flower its crisp edges, a design its sense of energy and intention. Every one of those decisions is made by the weaver, by hand, in the moment.

The selvedge is finished the traditional Tibetan way, a braided edge that moves in an S form, a more complex finish than the wool bound edges found in other carpetes we make.

In commercial carpet making, a design is imposed onto whatever yarn is available. In the Devi weave, we work the other way around. Every yarn is custom spun to serve the design, built from the start to achieve exactly what the pattern requires.

For the Devi weave, we use vegetable dyes exclusively. It is the only way we make it.

All of it adds up to a rug of unmatched quality.
